How can I delete a group I don't want to use?
I want to remove all the example groups that are automatically created when I
set up a site, then create just two groups with my own choice of name and
settings.
There doesn't seem to be any function to completely remove a group in either
the site administration or group administration menus.
Hi David,

Good question. You are right. There is currently no way to delete
groups. We plan to implement this at some stage, with appropriate
controls to prevent accidental loss of information.
Of the groups that are created when you start the site, however, only
the two "public" ones are visible to anyone except you as site
administrator. The "private" groups are visible only to group members,
and site admins.
You can easily hide the unwanted public groups, too, by following these
steps.
1: Navigate to Group Administration, and then to
"Edit the security properties of [GroupTitle]".
2: Set the "Group Visibility" to "Only group members".
You can create new groups, at any stage, of course.

But does hiding a group also block the e-mail address? One problem we
have on our own site running an earlier version of group server is the
hundreds of spam messages we get directed at the e-mail addresses:
particularly ones that followed a standard pattern, like the Example
group. Then GroupServer sends out rejection e-mails. But these go to the
faked From: addresses, so we kept getting bounces from those innocent
sites. In the end, I deleted all the unused e-mail addresses from
Postfix's look-up table.

This lack is particularly annoying when I make a mistake setting up a
group, and need to delete it and then start again. For example, if I set
up a discussion group and then realise it needs to be an announcement group.

Making a mistake with the group type, when creating a group, is very
annoying. Especially when everything else is correct! Hopefully we can
solve this problem early in the new year: the new group code, which
Alice Murphy and I are working on, will allow administrators to change
the group-type.
As you can see from this topic, http://onlinegroups.net/r/topic/74weDBD6hrRppYcYcumeEG site administrators frequently ask how they can delete a group. I've added this to the site administration FAQ. http://onlinegroups.net/support/faq/#deletegroup Currently, there is no way that a site administrator can delete a group. You can, however make the group secret, and remove all the users, so that only you will ever see it. Yes, it will make your site look a little untidy, to you, but it will also serve as a reminder of the _many_ things that you see, that others can not see.
