Hi All, As I am sure you are aware, your online groups site is currently provided free of charge. As from the beginning of 2012, OnlineGroups.Net is introducing monthly charges for online groups sites. The charges will be introduced for new sites first. Following that, we will phase in charges for existing sites. The monthly fees are based on the number of members of the site. You will be able to start as many public, private or secret groups as you like. Site members will be able to join as many of those groups as they like. Special features like a custom domain and custom site style will be included depending on the site size, in terms of the maximum number of members. This means, for example, that you will need a 25 member site, in order to have a custom domain. Details of the pricing are at <http://onlinegroups.net/sites/pricing/>. In some cases, we will be willing to negotiate a sponsorship arrangement involving lower charges. We will let you know the exact schedule for this closer to the time.

Hi Dan, Our groupsite we have is gaining momentum fast and our members are liking it a lot. I have a couple of questions on the pricing model: 1./ Is the pricing based on only those who have accepted invitations or will it be based on all the members? 2./ What happens when payment is not received on time? 3./ Any discounts for 1 year or multiple payments made upfront? 4./ What timeline are you looking at for phasing in old sites? Would also love to hear about the sponsorship opportunities. Kind regards, Benjamin Bett Professional Development Coordinator Association of International Schools in Africa (AISA)

Hi Benjamin, Thank you for your excellent questions. I am glad your site is going well! > 1./ Is the pricing based on only those who have accepted invitations > or will it be based on all the members? Pricing will be based on "size site" which determines the maximum number of "site members" which include those who have accepted invitations and those who have themselves joined public groups. > 2./ What happens when payment is not received on time? Site charges will be based on a subscription that charges a credit card monthly. If the credit card expires or is cancelled, or if there are insufficient funds or the subscription is cancelled, a payment will be missed. When a payment is missed, posting to the site will be disabled. All other functions will remain in place. To re-enable a disabled site, it will be necessary to start a new subscription, making an immediate payment. > 3./ Any discounts for 1 year or multiple payments made upfront? We have not considered that yet. > 4./ What timeline are you looking at for phasing in old sites? That is as yet unconfirmed but I expect the charges will be phased in for old sites during the first quarter of 2012. > Would also love to hear about the sponsorship opportunities. These are also as yet undecided, I am sorry.

Hi Dan, I am curious as to exactly how your "break points" work in your pricing scheme. Are the member sizes figures the low threshold that determines the category? For example, does "100 Member Site" mean "100 - 999 members," so that a 90 member site would cost $20 per month, and a 100 member site would be in the "250 Member Site" category and cost $50 per month? If that's the way it works, I suggest you state your membership figures in terms of ranges: 1 - 9 / 10 - 24 / 25 - 99 / 100 - 249 / 250 - 999 / 1000+, just to avoid having to answer future questions about this. Also, it seems that you would do well to institute an annual fee at some discount from the monthly pricing, as is common practice for web hosted services. Perhaps 12 months for the price of 11 months, for example. Thanks, Siraj al-Haqq On Dec 6, 2011, at 12:33 AM, Dan Randow wrote: Thank you for your excellent questions. Pricing will be based on "size site" which determines the maximum number of "site members" which include those who have accepted invitations and those who have themselves joined public groups. # 10 Member Site US$2 per month. # 25 Member Site US$5 per month. # 100 Member Site US$20 per month. # 250 Member Site US$50 per month. # 1,000 Member Site US$200 per month.
Thanks for your feedback, Siraj and Karen <http://onlinegroups.net/r/post/2eCGHxChjsm2JbELV9Mpdj>, I have edited the Pricing page <http://onlinegroups.net/sites/pricing/> to clarify that the number of site members referred to is a maximum. I expect we will consider a discounted annual fee at some stage. Karen, as most of our customers are not-for-profits, the pricing you see *is* the not-for-profit rate :).

Hi All, In preparation for the introduction of charges for OnlineGroups.Net sites, we have adjusted the pricing that will apply by removing some custom features. The prices for the various site-sizes remain unchanged. You can see the prices at <http://onlinegroups.net/sites/pricing/>. The following custom features have been removed. From 100 Member Sites and above: A support group. Selectable site colour scheme. From 250 Member Sites and above: Add members without invitation. Public-to-site-members groups. From 1,000 Member Sites: Your branding in site and email footers. We have removed these features because, while we can offer them now, all of them require hand-wrangling and some of them are rather less than polished. We are confident that the core features work well enough to be worth the prices we charge. We do plan to improve the features that are bundled with the standard site size levels listed on the Pricing page <http://onlinegroups.net/sites/pricing/>. When we do that, however, we want them to work smoothly. In the meantime, flexibility remains an important part of what we offer. So if you are interested in any of the following custom features, by all means get in touch with us for a chat about your requirements. * A support group — a group that non-members can post to. You can use this for a small helpdesk. * Selectable site colour scheme — there is a small but growing range of colour options for your site. We will switch the colour scheme of your site for free. Get in touch to find out more. * Add members without invitation — members' email addresses can be added to groups with no action being required by the member. * Public-to-site-members groups — groups where all site members and only site members can see the messages and join. * Your branding in site and email footers — OnlineGroups.Net footers will be removed from the site and emails and replaced with footers that reflect your brand. * A secure site. * Editable pages.

HI Dan Is it possible to delete groups? And is it possible to remove site members to make it affordable? Regards, Thomas Stephens
Hi Thomas, > Is it possible to delete groups? No, but you can disable them <http://onlinegroups.net/groups/ogn_admins/faq/#deletegroup>. > And is it possible to remove site members to make it affordable? A good question. Currently, we have to do that for you. If you would like to remove some site members from your site, please email me directly with a list of the members you would like removed. Within the next few weeks, we will be implementing a system that removes site members from the site when they are removed from all their groups. Please keep in mind that we will be implement charges for new sites only in the first instance. Once we have done that we will announce plans for charges for existing sites. with regards,

Dan, I wish you and your company success in your plan to monetize your service. I tried it out with a small group of 10 people about six months ago, and the forum worked very well. I was going to expand it as a community forum for our small scale advocacy group here in St. Paul, expecting about 250 participants. But since we have zero funds, $50 per month is beyond our financial means. Good luck…...

Dan, We're going to have to bow out too. We're a very small not-even-remotely-for-profit sports club and we just can't afford it, so we're off to dance with Google. Sorry about that, good luck and thanks for the great service so far. Cheers, Tom. So, Dan, How do I cancel my account without labelling you as spam?
Thank you for your questions, folks. I respond to Dave, Jan, Tom and Louise here. ❦ Dave T of Glory River Ministries asked <http://onlinegroups.net/r/post/62ZExKWqOPqjl9lde3bclp>: > So, will we be billed ...or how will this work? Here is how the subscriptions will work: The first month of a new site is free. During the first month the Site Administrator must create a credit card subscription. At the end of the first month, and every month after that, the site fee is charged to the credit card. The Site Administrator selects the site size. The selected site size determines the fee that is charged to the credit card. If a payment is missed the site will be disabled. A payment can be missed for any of the following reasons. The Site Administrator cancels the subscription. The selected site size is too small for the number of site members. The credit card expires, is cancelled or has insufficient funds. A subscription has not been created. When a site is disabled, group members can not post to groups on the site. All other functions remain in place. To enable a disabled site, the Site Administrator must create a new subscription, making an immediate payment. ❦ Jan Carr and Tom Bond gave their farewells <http://onlinegroups.net/r/post/4H3miDtmWFgyqHsjf9zFC9> and <http://onlinegroups.net/r/post/4sHYeDRq9tj1ShlW61ekrJ>. Thank you both for your feedback. I am really glad you like our service and sorry that you have to go through the inconvenience of moving your groups to another platform. I wish you well, too. ❦ Louise Andrew asked <http://onlinegroups.net/r/post/6gos0nQsdTielcDirCZ4gn>: > How do I cancel my account without labelling you as spam? To leave this group (OGN Admins), email <email obscured>?Subject=unsubscribe If you do not wish to keep your site running, then simply do nothing and it will be disabled in time. with regards to all,

Hi Dan Is it possible to think about the concept that most of the most successful internet based sites use? This is advertising, where the advertiser pays rather than the user. Not banner in your face advertising, "singlers meet hot singlers" ads etc etc, but clean, simple and relevant to the topic advertising like google use, this also becomes handy for the online group user and the advertiser. Maybe even Google adwords would start generating enough revenue, that way most of the work is already done. And this would keep your happy customers users using your site. Regards, Thomas Stephens
Hi Thomas, Thanks for raising this excellent question. We have thought about an advertising-based model and rejected it for the following reason. With an advertising-based model, the advertiser is the customer. The product is visitors to the site who are attracted by publicly visible content. That makes you, the Site Administrator, the *producer* of the product and your group members the workers. It makes our service a kind of factory that induces you to produce more. We do not want our service to be skewed in that way. With OnlineGroups *you* are our customer. This means we focus on what is best for you, your organisation and your group members. Here are a couple of cases where this is relevant. Currently, a large majority of the groups on OnlineGroups.Net sites are private or secret. Clearly our customers want these. Private and secret groups, however, produce no public content so they are of no value to advertisers. Another key part of the value that we offer is the opportunity to customise your site to reflect your organisation's identity. We deliberately keep our own branding low key for this reason. Festooning your site with the branding of an arbitrary third party would defeat this.

I am sorry, but I am confused. I already have a functioning group site and do not want to disturb it. How do I set up the payment plan or billing. Will I be sent a form page or a billing statement? I fall in the smallest group set, so I would want to pay at minimum Annually. What is the procedure and am I in danger of being disabled at this time? Dave Tilton

Hi Dave, Thank you for your questions. I am sorry you are confused and am quite happy to answer all questions until you and the other site administrators are clear about our plans. > I already have a functioning group site and > do not want to disturb it. What is the > procedure and am I in danger of being disabled at this time? Your group is currently in no danger of being disabled. We are not going to start the clock ticking on existing sites until 1 April 2012. You will need to create a subscription for your site by 1 May. After 1 April, you will see a link to create a subscription on the home page of your site. If you do not create a subscription, the system will send you email notification as the deadline approaches. Once you create a subscription, your credit card will be charged monthly for the fee applicable to the site size that you select. At this stage, we do not have immediate plans to provide a facility for annual payment, I'm afraid. with regards,

Hi Dan, can I suggest that a 50 (and 500?) member level be added. Currently when a group moves from say 25 to 26 members, the price per member nearly quadruples from US$2.40/yr to $9.23/yr If there was a 50 member level, at 26 members it would be $4.60/yr/member.
regards Eliot
Thank you for your suggestion, Eliot. We have revised the levels in the pricing scheme to smooth the spikes that occur by adding one more site member than the maximum for a level. The new pricing is at <http://onlinegroups.net/sites/pricing/>. The new levels are based on the same base price of US$0.20 per site member per month. The per-member price is now capped at US$0.40c per month. The levels now use nice base2-esque numbers which we hope you will enjoy. The prices for a custom domain and custom site style are now lower. We will add new features as we get them ready. with regards to all,

I am just evaluating your service for a project I am working on. It looks ideal, so far. Can I suggest you update your website so that all the banners and links which say "Start a free site" don't have the word "free" in. And provide some links to the pricing page. It would useful to have these next to the "free" site links, on the "start a site" page and on the "subscription" page. I don't object to paying for the service in principle but it was a surprise to find out that it was a subscription model. And then it was almost impossible to find the pricing. I now need to go and find out if we _can_ pay for the service or not before I go any further...
Cheers jamie
Hi Jamie, Thank you for evaluating the OnlineGroups.Net service. I am glad you like it. Thank you also for your feedback about our use of the phrase "Start a free site" and the difficulty you experienced finding the pricing information. OnlineGroups.Net sites are free for the first month. No credit card or payment is required until a month after a site is started. This makes it easy for people like you to evaluate the service and make a decision and its value to your organisation. I agree with you that the pricing information is hard to find, which makes it harder to evaluate the system. We will add some links to the pricing page <http://onlinegroups.net/sites/pricing/>, including on the Start a Site <http://onlinegroups.net/sites/> and Subscribe pages. Thanks again for your feedback. with regards,
