Hi there, I have noticed that quite a few MSN Group managers are starting sites and groups with OnlineGroups.Net. Here's a quick welcome to you folks, and an invitation to let us know if you have any questions. I know that the announcement of the closure of MSN Groups has come as a shock to many, and that the default migration option offered does not suit everybody. Here at OnlineGroups.Net, we can't offer automatic migration of messages, files and members, but we can offer great email groups that work like web forums on sites where you can have multiple groups. You can use OnlineGroups.Net groups for sharing files, photos and YouTube movies, and for live chat. I'd be happy to answer any questions that you have, right here in the Admins group. Here are a couple of other pages that might interest you. Hi Dan Can one have a "chat room" on onlinegroups where the discussions are only open to those invited to the group rather than a public forum? Welcome to the MSN Group managers who have started up sites with OnlineGroups.Net, and joined this group. I have been asked a few times if there is a way to automatically migrate posts and photos from an MSN Group. Unfortunately, I do not know a way of doing this, as I am not aware of any way of exporting messages and files from an MSN Group. If it was possible to export messages, files and photos from an MSN Group, then we might be able to provide some way of importing them into an OnlineGroups.Net group. Perhaps one of you MSN Group folks can help out here. Do you know any way to export messages, photos and documents from an MSN Group?
cheers, Dan OnlineGroups.Net
One or two MSN Group Managers have asked me about good ways to promote the groups they have started on OnlineGroups.Net. Here are some suggestions. Create a Great-Looking Home Page
-------------------------------- Firstly, customise the home page on your new site. An attractive and interesting home page will let people know that they've come to the right place. See the following link for some instructions on this. http://onlinegroups.net/r/post/5TzR132gH3yMo0zQUYlLdq Post Messages, Pictures and Files --------------------------------- Secondly, post messages, pictures and files to the public groups on your site. If you haven't started a public group on your site, then start a group, and invite three or four of you friends to join the group and start posting to it. That will create interesting content that will attract others to visit the site and join your groups. It will also let people from MSN Groups know that you have created a place where they can find the people and conversations they know. Promote Your New Site on MSN Groups ----------------------------------- Now you are ready to promote your group. The content you have created will attract Google search results, but the people you really want to attract are in MSN Groups. There are many people who know they have to leave their MSN Groups and are looking for similar groups to go to. If you manage an MSN Group, post links to your new site in your MSN Group. If you are a member of other MSN Groups with a similar focus, but with no clear plan to move to a new location, try inviting people from those groups to check out your new site. If people visit your new site and find people and conversations that they recognise, they will join your groups, and add to the conversations. And, here's a bonus suggestion for those wondering how to get old messages, files and photos over from MSN Groups… Many Hands Make Light Work -------------------------- If a lot of people move from an MSN Group to an OnlineGroups.Net site, and everyone brings across some of their favourite messages, pictures and files, then you will soon have a vibrant new groups site, with all the most interesting content from your MSN Group. Questions? Ask 'em here. Hi Dan I'm new here and seems a nice place. I'm italian, so be patience with my poor english Well, I was attracted here by the possibility that I read 'you can migrate your group msn...' I was once already deluded by a site (Aimoo) which did not specify some important things. So, i would be secure because time does not play to our favor. Then: I started a site here (ex. http://wind.onlinegroups.net/) I've my msn group to migrate (ex http://groups.msn.com/hurricane) I've the mail of my group (ex <email obscured>) How i can join the msn group with my site here ? After february my msn group will be close down so every thread will not exist. For this, seems necessary that the group must be upload on a place, if someone want continue the discussions actually in the group. I token a look here but i haven't found any info about the migration of group OR how the collegament MyMsnGroup-MySyteHere could be done. Can you explain for me (and for more people) how the migrate works OR in which the migrate consist ? (Or if you can give us more detail information about all process of migration) ? Thanks in advance for your patience and interest Wind
Hi Wind, You are welcome here. Your English is much better than my Italian. At present there is no automated way to bring people and posts from an MSN Group to an OnlineGroups.Net group. We have received some test messages from Scott Dudley, who made a comment on our blog offering an option for exporting messages from an MSN Group. http://blog.onlinegroups.net/2008/10/28/onlinegroupsnet-welcomes-msn-group-managers/#comment-2953 We are working with Scott on ways to make it easy to get posts from MSN Groups to OnlineGroups.Net and hope to report on progress with that soon. In the meantime, below is an updated guide to migrating an MSN Group to an OnlineGroups.Net group. cheers, Dan . . . MIGRATING AN MSN GROUP TO ONLINEGROUPS.NET To migrate an MSN Group to OnlineGroups.Net, you must move people and content. MIGRATING PEOPLE There is currently no way (that we at OnlineGroups.Net know of) to export group-member information from MSN Groups. The only way to migrate people is therefore, to invite them to join your new group at OnlineGroups.Net. Here are some tips on how to do that. 1. Create a Great-Looking Home Page Customise the home page on your new site. An attractive and interesting home page will let people know that they've come to the right place. See the following link for some instructions on this. http://onlinegroups.net/r/post/5TzR132gH3yMo0zQUYlLdq 2. Post Messages, Pictures and Files Post messages, pictures and files to the public groups on your site. If you haven't started a public group on your site, then start a group, and invite three or four of you friends to join the group and start posting to it. That will create interesting content that will attract others to visit the site and join your groups. It will also let people from MSN Groups know that you have created a place where they can find the people and conversations they know. 3. Promote Your New Site on MSN Groups Now you are ready to promote your group. MIGRATING CONTENT We do not currently offer an automated process or migrating posts from MSN Groups to OnlineGroups.Net groups. The best suggestion we have for this is teamwork. Many Hands Make Light Work If a lot of people move from an MSN Group to an OnlineGroups.Net site, and everyone brings across some of their favourite messages, pictures and files, then you will soon have a vibrant new groups site, with all the most interesting content from your MSN Group.
